Dynamic Influence of Mr. Lonzell Holman.

As we approach the time frame of celebrating black history, it is important for me to reflect on the life of a fallen soldier, Mr. Lonzell Holman. He served as the director of the substance abuse treatment program at the Johnston unit in Winnsboro, TX. It was during my early career in the field of chemical dependency counseling that I had the privilege of working alongside Mr. Holman at the Johnston Unit. This experience allowed me to engage in the therapeutic process and interventions while learning from a true master in the field.

Under Mr. Holman’s guidance, I discovered the power of utilizing my own strengths while remaining grounded in the fundamental principles of counseling. He taught me the importance of showing grace and compassion, while also maintaining a firm and unwavering stance. Through his mentorship, I learned the value of perseverance and the significance of leading by example.

Although I eventually moved on from the Johnston Unit and pursued other opportunities, I never forgot the foundation and lessons instilled in me by Mr. Holman. Over the years, I would occasionally come across his work on Facebook, witnessing the impact he continued to make through his involvement with the Winners Circle, a dynamic group in Tyler, TX. I eagerly anticipated the day when I would have the chance to shake his hand once again.

However, on the afternoon of January 12, 2022, I received the devastating news that Lonzell Holman had passed away. My heart weighs heavy with sorrow. His presence will forever be felt within the field of substance abuse treatment. He was a man who commanded respect and admiration, leaving an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. Until our souls meet again, Mr. Holman, your legacy will live on.
