I am honored to have the chance to share my knowledge and experiences with others. As a professional percussionist and educator, my mission is to inspire and empower the next generation of drummers. I firmly believe that everyone possesses the ability to unlock their inner rhythm and express themselves through the universal language of music.

Finding A Muze: Casey Muze Speaks On Finding Different Creative Outlets

“Drummer guy.”

“Percussion dude.”

All across East Texas, Casey Muze is known for the variety of drums he brings to festivals to give visitors a chance to bang to the beat of their own drum — and he hates it.

“I don’t like it, because I do so many other things than just that,” he said. “I get put in this box of being ‘the drum guy’ or ‘the percussion king’ or whatever it may be — that is not all I do.”

Casey has always loved music, though as a native of Longview, he found the East Texas music scene to be limiting.

“It was either country or punk rock,” he said. “I’m Black, and it just didn’t make sense to me. It just didn’t. It wasn’t anything that I wanted to do, it didn’t call to me.”

After realizing neither of those genres particularly spoke to him, Casey decided to go to school in Dallas for music production.

“I had the nerve to stand out and be a live production DJ in a sense,” he said. “It was strange — I was used to having limited accessibility to a variety of music.”

And while Casey is well known for being a percussionist, it wasn’t something he chose — rather, it chose him.

“When I was like 25, that’s when I decided to dedicate time to percussion, but I’ve been a drummer since age 2 — it was something I adapted to,” he said. “It wasn’t something I intentionally did.”

Casey moved back to Longview after finishing school, and a mentor encouraged him to become involved with a local Methodist church.

“He encouraged me to morph into a role of music leadership,” he said. “That involved me fully integrating musically because, at that time, Methodist churches were primarily hymnals and traditional hymnals.”

Casey wanted to introduce the church to new things, and as such, bought his first djembe.

“It just kind of happened from there,” he said. “When I moved to Nacogdoches and started playing, I’ve just been this guy, ‘the drum guy,’ ‘the percussion dude,’ I don’t know. It’s just truly become my testimony over time. I play drums differently than most people play drums.”

But Casey is much more than that, he said. He is a public speaker, he mentors adolescents and he does event hosting.

“I’m truly just passionate about being an agent of change,” he said. “Celebrating unity, celebrating camaraderie, being accepting of others’ differences and also celebrating different mental health modalities.”

Casey hopes to inspire others to know they don’t have to be one thing — they can pursue whatever creative outlet sparks their passion.

“I would hope that someone finds a creative way to break down barriers,” he said. “I don’t care if your process is drumming, I don’t care if your process is writing, I just advocate for people finding something that is creatively and spiritually their own process and their own thing.”
